About Us |
|
BALANCE. That’s the focus of our breeding philosophy. Mentally stable and physically sound, world class versatile sporting dogs - that anyone can hunt, train, and live with. * Early developing pups that show up loaded with natural ability and purposeful hunting instincts. * The intelligence and cooperation to finish early and easily. The temperament and disposition to want to work for you. *Correct conformation for handsome good looks and, a worry free lifetime of companionship
* Dogs with the desire to light up the field and shred the marsh, yet will remain admirably calm in the home.
That last one may be the most important to us. It’s called the “switch” - the dogs ability to switch gears, to realize his environment and adapt his behavior accordingly. To fire it up for the hunt and then dial it back down when you return home. We decided early on that breeding for the switch would play a key role in picking sires and dams. All of our dogs live in our home, and we wanted to be sure that if we placed a pup with you, that it would be a dog you would want to live with.
EVALUATION
At STERNJAGER, we strongly believe the only way to ensure that the strongest hunting genetics are inarguably passed on is for the breeding stock to be proven thru extensive testing and evaluation. The use of established testing formats act as a universal measuring stick. To that end we are active in the AKC conformation and hunt tests and especially active in the North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA).
The NAVHDA testing system is the cornerstone of our evaluation process and is unique in several ways. It is the most comprehensive and detailed testing system in North America. Dogs don’t compete in NAVHDA against each other, but rather the dogs performance is measure against an established standard. The tests evaluate upland hunting and waterfowl hunting scenarios with the dog and handler acting as a team to handle game before and after the shot. Teeth, coat, eyes, and temperament are judged as well. It thoroughly measures the whole versatile dog.
The NAVHDA judging teams are all volunteer and are comprised of one Senior Judge along with two Judges and are usually from different parts of the country. All judges are required to undertake an apprenticeship of two or three years, or longer, in order to qualify as a judge. Additionally, NAVHDA judges must attended planned Judges Workshops to stay current, and well as successfully handle dogs in NAVHDA tests. The great strength of the NAVHDA system lies in the boundless commitment and selfless service of it’s Judging cadre. STRENJAGER recognizes the efforts and sacrifices these volunteers make to “improving, fostering and promoting the versatile dog in North America”. Thank you judges.
