“WooDY” STERNJAGERS Big stick |

Woody was the pick of the litter pup from our 2011 pairing of Izzy and Johnny, and was to be the next generation sire for our line. He vary well may still be, but unfortunately it will not happen at our house. In early December I experienced a career change that will consume a greater than expected portion of my time and regrettably that means I will not have time to give this future star the time he deserves and needs.
Woody is crate trained, well started on house breaking, and comes to his name. He is as calm a house dog we have every had, and is always affectionate. He was handled early and often as a pup, and was socialized extensively . He has shown an early love of water, and even tolerates cold water incredibly well—he swam beaver ponds with skim-ice and slush on a January pheasant hunt in Valley Falls, Kansas. I listed his coat above as dense and harsh, and it really is very harsh. It is as nice a shorthair coat as we have produced and I suspect that will serve him well on late season trips.
Although he was only six weeks old when I hunted Pierre, SD I opted to take Woody along. The weather cooperated and we hunted him with a string of Utility dogs to show him the ropes. He started close, but after three days of sharptails on short grass prairie that let him see to the horizon, Woody was working a comfortable 40-50 yard range and was hitting objectives. On the forth day I shot a pheasant over his point, and that sealed it for him. He chased the ringnecks through the shelter belts and cattail sloughs the rest of the trip. By the time we left the national grassland I believe Woody had discovered and truly understood his purpose—to pursue game for the gun.
We made four or five local trips around Kansas before my employment change forced me to surrender the rest of my season , and except for half an afternoon hunting in January, he has been snuggling up in the house with my boys. My job shows no sign of letting up and we have realized it’s just best for Woody to find a situation where he can have the time he needs.
Woody is true to his blending of German and American stock and exemplifies the switch...the ability to switch gears, to realize his environment and adapt his behavior accordingly. To fire it up for the hunt and then dial it back down when you return home.
This a rear opportunity on a very well started dog. |
